Some folk say they “don’t do” people. But if you “don’t do” people, you won’t have success; because success doesn’t come to a person who has isolated himself from others.
It has been said that if you want something done right, do it yourself. That may be true in some instances, but there comes a time when a person needs assistance. Everybody has different talents and skills, and at times, a person may need something done that he is not qualified to do. Even if he is qualified in an area, he may be overwhelmed by his current responsibilities and needs someone else’s strength in order to get the job done.
If a person asks for help, it doesn’t mean he is weak. In fact, it takes strength to ask for another’s assistance with a task. It is important to know that a person doesn’t have to be superhuman, doing everything himself, even if society suggests that’s the norm.
A person can live a life of stress, believing the lie that he is frail if he asks for help. He will find himself overloaded and frustrated all the time because he refuses to seek out assistance from another. One doesn’t have to be all to be successful. As the saying goes, one can be a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none.
Is there an area in your life where you need assistance? Are you operating under the premise that if it’s going to get done correctly, you have to do it yourself? Is doing it all yourself causing you stress and frustration? Do you think a helping hand would make your life easier?
No, not everybody may be able to assist you with what you need, but there is somebody who can assist. If that person can’t assist you with the major tasks, he may be able to assist you with smaller ones. For example, if you are a stay-at-home-mom, you may ask your husband or one of the children to assist you with a household chore. If you need a job done at home, you may need to hire someone to perform it. If you are a leader of an organization, you may have to delegate to others. Whatever your situation is, know that you don’t have to do everything on your own. There is always someone available to assist if you would only loosen the reins and give up a little control.
Make a decision to take the load off. Ask for help if you need it. And once you ask for help, don’t micromanage things. Give the person an opportunity to do his best before you add suggestions. If you loosen the reins just a tad, you may be surprised by the results.
